The Southwest Focal Point Community Center hosted a delicious event on July 27. The Pembroke Pines 2016 Summertime Key Lime Master Chef Baking Challenge featured nine Key Lime dessert entrees that were judged on both taste and appearance. The organizers of the competition enlisted the help of Key Lime experts Bob and David Roth and two men in blue, Pembroke Pines Police Officers Andrew Feldman and Manny Salinas, to decide the winners.
Bob and David Roth have credibility in the Key Lime delicacy field as they run Bob Roth’s New River Groves, the establishment that is the home of Terry’s World Famous Key Lime Pie. Terry’s Key Lime Pie was created in the early 1970s by the late Terry Roth, and in 2006 it was named the “Official State Pie of Florida” by the State.
The Roth’s used their 52 years of experience in the citrus business to select Sandra Levine’s Key Lime Cheesecake Cookies as the best dessert in the challenge. Shirley Schwartz’s Key Lime Coconut Macaroon Cookies and Cathleen Norris’ Key Lime Pie rounded out the top three, respectively.
“The First Place dessert scored a 97,” said Bob Roth, after the panel of judges discussed and tabulated the results. “The Key Lime Cheesecake Cookies had just the right amount of tart sweetness and a fine tasting crust.”
Following a presentation to the three winners, Southwest Focal Point Community Center teen volunteers and staff served all attendees samples of each key lime dessert. The next Master Chef Challenge at the center will be held on December 1.
